I do not feel comfortable celebrating the violent death of anyone, even in the cases of national security or the death penalty. I never feel good about that kind of punishment, despite the crime. Do I have a problem with feeling smug? Apparently not because I do feel a certain degree of smugness after suffering through the eight years of the Bush presidency - the eight years that practically brought our country to the brink of bankruptcy, the loss of privacy, the fear that led to dismissing anyone who might disagree with the administration's ideology, the joke that became of the United States abroad (remember this?), the preemptive unilateral war against a country that did not attack us..... yes, I do feel a bit smug.
Yet, more than that, I am happy that we have been able to bring the national conversation back from the cliff of crazy for at least this moment in time. President Obama said he is too busy to deal with "silliness". Will anyone listen now?
President Obama has been called the favorite of "Hollywood elites", yet there was nothing more staged than Bush's aircraft landing under a 'Mission Accomplished' banner. All that was missing was a pumping Kenny Loggins soundtrack. Thus, the difference between facade and action.
It is of no surprise to me that President Bush declined the invitation offered by President Obama to attend a New York ceremony on Thursday. He didn't get it then and he doesn't get it now. It wasn't about him, yet that was his presidency. (Note: When I say Bush, I am referring to Bush and his administration.)
