As a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. And that includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in Lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances. This is America. And our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country and that they will not be treated differently by their government is essential to who we are. The writ of the Founders must endure.I so respect that he made this statement by supporting what is the very foundation of what is America. One would think Christians would understand this since NOTHING ever stops them from barging in to a country OR a workplace conference room.
I know in my bones that the GOP has just been waiting with bated breath for President Obama to comment on this debate. It might hurt President Obama in the long run,as many people can't see beyond that little noses. "Religious freedom must be unshakable", he said. I would add that freedom FROM religion should continue to be supported as well.
I am proud of you, President Obama.
