Was it just me or were The Oscars more entertaining this year? Of course, Steve Martin makes everything better just by showing up. Here are a few of my thoughts:
Best dressed: Sarah Jessica Parker (Oscar de la Renta) and Matthew Broderick (Tom Ford). Parker's dress was amazing and Carrie Bradshaw-worthy.
Best hair: Carey Mulligan
James Taylor sounded as good as he did in 1970. In My Life was an excellent choice for the In Memoriam.
Crash! Did you hear that? The glass ceiling in Hollywood was finally shattered!! Kathryn Bigelow, director of The Hurt Locker, kicked ass! Bigelow received an Oscar for Best Director. She is Queen of the World!
I think Sandra Bullock is great at what she does best. Even she knows she isn't the best actress and that Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren are incredible. Carey Mulligan also gave an amazing performance in An Education. I suspect the selection of Sandra Bullock is a calculated effort to get mainstream movie audiences involved in the Oscars. Colin Firth probably deserved the Oscar but sometimes one gets an Oscar for a body of work. NOBODY TOLD ME LENNY KRAVITZ WAS IN PRECIOUS! He is my George Clooney.
Nice tribute to John Hughes. Again, Hughes films are more interesting to mainstream audiences, which supports my claim that they are after a larger audience this year (see Sandra Bullock).
I blogged about the song, The Weary Kind (Theme song from Crazy Heart), back in December 2009. It was good to see so many young screenwriters, songwriters, and film makers. Can you believe Quentin Tarantino is part of the Hollywood elite?
On a personal note:
Dumbest things I did this weekend: 1) Pain - I hit myself in the nose with the car door and my nose, neck, and head still hurt, and 2) Funny - I fell asleep with gum in my mouth and drooled gum and gum juice all over my pillow and in my hair. I'm glad I was still laughing about it when I was cutting gum out of my hair this morning.
Countdown to UA Spring Practice: Practice starts Friday, March 12. Yes! Coach Saban has now been in a movie that won an Oscar, which means Phil Fulmer was in a film that won an Oscar. Yuck.
I have a terrible feeling that I'm going to be late for work tomorrow morning....again! Go to bed!

After the all-time low ratings of the 2008 Oscar telecast, I agree with you that the academy has been making a conscious effort to get more people watching. I think that's also the reason behind expanding the number of Best Picture nominees to 10.
Although I enjoyed the John Hughes tribute, I think it would have been a good idea if they had trimmed about 30 seconds off of it in order to fit in a couple of glaring omissions from the "In Memoriam" segment (Farrah Fawcett and Bea Arthur).
Malcolm - I also read Henry Gibson was inadvertently omitted from the In Memoriam, along with Arthur and Fawcett. Major faux paux! I didn't realize the omissions until after I had posted.
I actually enjoyed the Spirit Awards more (IFC), but then I usually do. I did expect more from Eddie Izzard as host, though.
Thanks for your comments.
