Super Bowl Commercials

The Tebow Couple - That's it? This somewhat innocuous ad didn't live up to the CBS hype and left me wondering: 1) why is Tim Tebow tackling his mother, and 2) why doesn't someone give this woman a sandwich, as she is frighteningly thin. Message received, if only by its sponsorship.

ManCrunch - This commercial for the gay dating site was rejected by CBS as not meeting their National Broadcast Standards for Super Bowl Sunday. After viewing, my response was: that's it? That was so not gay to me. It comes across as two straight guys whose male-bonding turns sexual, the one thing straight guys everywhere seem to fear. Plus, they aren't even kissing. The two men standing in the kitchen slapping each other seemed more realistic to me (I forget the product). And, weren't there same-sex couples in the park of the commercial with The Simpsons (forget the product)? And, my point is...???  Oh. If they had the money to pay for the commercial then why didn't CBS air it?

GoDaddy - Overused and overrated.  Boring. Move on.

eTrade - Not too fond of commercials with babies, yet the jealous girlfriend angle was cute and gave me a new word, "milkalcoholic" to go with the golfing baby's "shankapotamus".

Doritos - Diversity Ink wrote about the buzz on radio and around the Web of this commercial being considered racist by some people. No disrespect to people who feel this way, but I didn't see it myself. I just saw an attractive woman in an attractive home with an protective young son. Slapping his mom's date was uncalled for but played well in the commercial to make it even funnier. If one wants to overanalyze this, where is the babysitter? Could it be that the child is going out with them? We don't know. We don't care. It's funny.

Dave, Oprah, Jay - This played to me like an insiders' joke and I didn't get it. Was it an ABC, NBC, CBS joke?

Budweiser - These lean a little towards alcoholism, as people will give up anything meaningful in their lives for a Bud, especially a Bud Light as one wouldn't want to be an alcoholic AND fat. The cow and the Clydesdale friendship was okay.

Maybe for once the commercials seemed so bland because the Super Bowl game was so exciting. Congratulations New Orleans - city and team!

The Tebow ad was lukewarm to say the least. If it wasn't for all the controversy it generated before airing, I wouldn't have known what the hell it was about!

ManCrunch probably came out a winner anyway because of the publicity they got for CBS not airing the spot.

As for GoDaddy, they do need to freshen it up a bit. I wonder if their site has ever crashed during the Super Bowl from horny people trying to access after their commercials air.

Adding Jay Leno to the Oprah/Dave mix was a nice and unexpected touch. Because it's been almost 20 years since the controversy surrounding Jay and Dave vying to succeed Johnny Carson as host of The Tonight Show, a lot of people may have missed the joke.

By the way, thanks for linking to D.I.!
