Birmingham Greek Festival
The 37th annual Greek Food Festival is this weekend in Birmingham held by Holy Trinity - Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Because of the late hour and the rain on Friday night, my friends and I decided on a take-out smorgasbord of appetizers of pites (filo triangles filled with feta cheese mixture or spinach and feta cheese mixture) and dolmathes (grape leaves stuffed with seasoned rice and topped with lemon). For entrees, I had the traditional gyro with Greek salad; Sheila had the pasticho, which is a combination of layers of macaroni, ground beef in a Greek tomato sauce and topped with a layer of cream bechamel sauce; and, Brad had the Greek-style chicken baked and basted in a marinade of olive oil, lemon juice, and oregano. We passed on the pastries but, after looking at the menu, it would be wise to return today and then save a few for me! (hint, hint)
